Assioma PRO MX-1 SPD Power Meter

The Favero Assioma MX-1 is a single-sided pedal power meter. Measurements are only taken in the left pedal. The power of the left leg is then doubled. It is therefore assumed that your legs are of equal strength. The left-right distribution and other parameters of the pedaling movement cannot be displayed with the MX-1. The power meter is based on the Shimano SPD (MTB) pedal system. It is also available in a double-sided version, the Assioma MX-2.

Highlights and Downsides

  • dual-sided power measurement with high accuracy (± 1%)
  • rechargeable battery (60h operating time)
  • integrated cadence measurement
  • IAV Cycling Dynamics
  • low weight (384g for both pedals)
  • spare parts available (easy replacement of bearings or pedal body)
  • plug 'n play and easy to switch between bikes
  • works with many bike computers and smartphones (ANT+ & Bluetooth)
  • can only be used with SPD cleats
  • only left side measurement - in case of muscular imbalances, the displayed values can deviate from the actual power
  • in a crash, the bike usually lands on the pedal

Single-sided measurement

With the Assioma MX-1, only the left pedal is equipped with measurement electronics. In case of muscular imbalances the one-sided Assioma MX-1 is at a disadvantage. This makes the MX-1 particularly suitable for beginners and riders on a tight budget who can do without the last percent of accuracy. For ambitious riders who want to know more about their pedaling technique, the double-sided Assioma MX-2 is the better choice.

Compatible bike computers and smartphones

ANT+ capable bike computers (Garmin, Wahoo, O-Synce, Sigma, SRM, etc.) work seamlessly with the Assioma MX. As data is also transmitted via Bluetooth Smart, the power meter can also be paired with smartphones and popular training apps such as Zwift, Strava, Bkool, Trainerroad and Rouvy.

Compatible bikes

The Assioma MX-1 power meter can generally be used with any bike (MTB, gravel bike, trekking bike, etc.). You need cycling shoes with a 2-hole mounting to be able to mount the cleats.

Cleats

The pedals are based on the Shimano SPD standard. Cycling shoes with a 2-hole standard are required to mount the cleats on the shoes. Original Shimano SPD cleats can be used with the Assioma MX pedals.

Rechargeable battery

The battery life of the Assioma MX-1 is 60 hours. To charge the batteries, the pedals remain mounted on the bike. The included charging cable is simply clicked on the pedal with a magnetic connector.

Construction and design

All electronics and the battery are securely installed in the compact and robust pedal axle. This means that there are no weak points such as battery covers or USB ports that could be penetrated by water or dirt. The power meter is therefore optimally protected (IP67) and ready for a dirty MTB or gravel unit.

Weight

The weight of the complete Assioma MX-1 power meter pedals is lower than many other pedals without a power meter - the set of Assioma MX-1 pedals weighs less than 384g including the battery!

Accuracy

The measuring accuracy is an excellent +-1%.

Oval chainrings

The Assioma MX-1 can be used with oval chainrings without restriction. The measurement is not affected by irregular pedaling (e.g. during uphill sprints) or oval chainrings. The Assioma MX-1 determines the actual instantaneous angular velocity during the entire pedal stroke and thus offers high accuracy under all conditions.

IAV Power System

With IAV you get an in-depth look at your pedaling technique. In addition to the obligatory power readings, the following data is also transmitted:

- Cadence
- Torque Effectiveness (percentage of force on the pedal that is effective for propulsion)
- Pedal Smoothness (uniformity of force distribution during pedal stroke)
- Power Phase (part of the pedal stroke in which the most power is applied to the pedal)
- Rider Position (time spent sitting or standing)
- PCO - Platform Center Offset (where the force is exerted on the pedal)

Setup and firmware updates

A smartphone and the Assioma app (Android, IOS) are required for initial setup and registration. The Assioma app is also required to install firmware updates. The power meter settings (e.g. the crank length used) can be conveniently adjusted using a smartphone.

Installation

Installation is simple - the MX-1 is simply screwed onto the crank like any other pedal using a pedal wrench. A real plug 'n play power meter. This also makes it easy to switch between different bikes. The Assioma MX-1 pedals can also be easily taken on vacation or to a training camp and mounted on a rental bike.

Durability

The Assioma MX-1 is designed to be robust and sustainable. The power meter has a modular design and wear parts such as bearings or pedal bodies are easy to replace. The Assioma MX-1 is still new on the market and long-term experience is still lacking (as of spring 2024). In our experience, the tried-and-tested Assioma road bike pedals are currently the best and most durable power meter pedals on the market. The MX-1 pedals are a completely new development. The manufacturer's high standards and quality control give us hope that the MX-1 will follow in the footsteps of the Assioma road bike pedals in terms of quality and durability.

Warranty and support

The Assioma MX-1 comes with a 2-year warranty. The pedals are produced by Favero in Italy. We have had very good experiences with Favero. If there are any problems, Favero offers good and customer-oriented support. If the pedals are connected to the Assioma app, it is possible to start a remote fault diagnosis via the Internet and identify the problem. A quick solution can often be found without having to send in the pedals.
